PUNANY BY CLODDY - RIDDIM MIX

"Originally the word "punaany" or "punani" was used in India -- its in the Kama Sutra -- to describe the female sex organ.

Indian laborers (Coolie massive!) were used to build roads in Jamaica and the Caribbean during the 1930's, 40's and 50's so a lot of Indian slang made its way into the Jamaican vernacular.

There are literally thousands of Jamaican dancehall records glorifying the punany....probably rivaled only by ganja songs. (Ganja is also an Indian-based word).

I read this, and the first thing that occurred to me is that Jamaica basically "Ethered" India with "Punaany." ("You made it a hot line, I made it a hot song..."

Except it was more than just one hot song. The Punaany Riddim is arguably the biggest one in the history of reggae, having been recycled and used for a span of over 20 years. The attached video is an excerpt from a mix I made, which starts off with 16 minutes of the biggest baddest riddim ever.

KOMPA MANO 1

This was more of a juggling session, ironically inspired by a man I never got to meet – something I’ll always regret. Music has this interesting ability though, to transport me to places I've never been - in this reality or others.

For example, a reality in which I *did* get a chance to meet Emmanuel Toussaint. To actually be party to some of the stories I’ve heard of him. To laugh at his jokes. Those oh so Haitian jokes that are only funny in Kreyol or perfect English with a nice Haitian accent. Those desert-dry comments and observations borne of a cleverness and wit, sharpened only by grind of the first generation Haiti-New York diaspora.

I’ve always likened Brooklyn Haitians to living next door to Edith & Archie Bunker; Whereas the Queens (Elmont, Valley Stream, Baldwin) Haitians, in my view had essentially moved on up, with the likes of Mr. Bentley and the Willises for neighbors. Now in this reality, I can’t say that anyone has ever seen Emmanuel Toussaint do the George Jefferson. But I’d imagine he cut a rug in his day to some of these tunes right here. And this juggling session took me to a place where I got to watch…and even pick up a few things…

When we got to the distinctions between Reggae and Dancehall, she asked "If you had to choose only one type to listen to for ever, which would it be."

Leave it to the woman who up until a few days ago, didn't know what a "riddim" was, to existentially confound me with regards to Reggae Music. So who wins? Reggae or Dancehall? Only one way to figure it out. Time fi Clash!

My own personal moment of nirvana...when I feel like like I'm standing at the epicenter of the Higgs particle itself, is when I am mixing and dancing at the same time. When that right riddim hits, the mixing is pure desire, and the dancing is compulsion - together, perfection.

All that took place while putting this together. Two of my favorite riddims. The first, the lesser known Blue Steel, which had the misfortune of coming out the same year as riddims such as The Phantom, Thrilla, Cool Fusion, and Scoobay. But it was no less dope! And I always felt that it would be the perfect mix lead-in for the more popular Egyptian riddim, made famous by Sean Paul and Elephant Man's respective renditions - but I never heard any deejay do it.

So I put on my cape, grabbed the headphones and...

HOT WAX and ARAB ATTACK RIDDIM MIX by CLODDY

I contend that the 90-99 is and will likely forever be the greatest decade in Dancehall music. Sure I'm biased, but I challenge anyone to prove me wrong.

The riddims were just simply hotter. Case in point, the riddim I mixed here:

* Hot Wax

* by very special request by none other than TBHC Naj-Lah, the Arab Attack

Think I'm lying? Test me and press play. Ah so mi seh.

REGGAE CONCERT SERIES V.3 - BEENIE MAN: King of the Dancehall

My first time seeing Beenie Man perform left a lasting impression. It was the first time I’d experienced an artist who would not get off the stage. What I mean is, his time was up, and he wouldn’t get off. He hadn’t yet finished going through his hits for the audience, and for certain,, we wanted it all! This was 15 years ago. Since then, the hits haven’t stopped coming.

I had the opportunity to talk with Beenie in an interview for Island Vibes Magazine a little while ago (http://www.islandvibesmag.com/beenie-man-de-gal-dem-sugah/), and he spoke of his love of creating music for the people. Sounds like rhetoric perhaps. But you don’t churn out a volume of hits like the ones listed below in a career spanning over 30 years without the people behind you. So who’s the King of the Dancehall? Press play and you be the judge.

<itunes:summary>My first time seeing Beenie Man perform left a lasting impression.

DANCEHALL RIDDIM RIDE, VOLUME I: SHOW MI HOW YUH' DANCE

Just in time for Summer – a crop of bangin’ 2011 dancehall riddims mixed for an hour and forty minutes of you pleasure. Enjoy!

RIDDIM SECTIONS:
	---	---
00:00:00 - Full Size
00:06:48 - Hungry Dawg
00:09:32 - Dutty Sneekaz
This set of riddims makes for the sweetest intro with the help of Vybz Kartel, Beenie Man, Lady Saw, Stacious & more.

00:17:20 - Party Vibe
You can’t listen to this riddim and plan on not moving your body. Not gon’ happen. Oh, and that Shaggy on here, “Wave,” is bananas!

00:22:41 - Blizzard
00:26:43 - Cyclist
When Beenie kicks off a song with “Zagga zagga zow-wow-wow,” you just know good things are about to follow. The party gets started right about here.

00:30:48 - Dancehall Alert
Love love LOVE this riddim! It’s a loose remake of the old Headache riddim ( a bassline no riddim has yet to surpass btw). Also, this riddim features Sizzla…being Sizzla! Miss that guy.

00:36:00 - Problem
This riddim is precisely what is says it is. With Beenie at the helm with Ward 21 in the engine room, any riddim is a problem.

00:42:10 - Problem/Racer blend ft. Beenie Man
00:44:04 - Racer
My absolute favorite riddim on this podcast. Sweet sweet sweet. It’s like a perfect amalgam of a lover’s rock vibe with a dancehall power behind it.

00:51:00 - Retarded
SICK SICK SICK!!! You just have to hear for yourself.

00:55:45 - Enemy Lines
Might be my 2nd favorite riddim on the mix, if for nothing else due to the Beenie/Bounty clash which makes anappearance. Oh, and we've got Elephant, Cobra, Vybz! Battle lines are clearly drawn.

01:10:35 - Jericho
Vybz. Kymani Marley. Tough riddim right here.

01:14:16 - Bus Stop
The Matterhorn and Elephant on here are particularly hot.

01:21:36 - Pepper
This riddim took a few seconds to get me because it at first reminded me of that “Skip to My Lou” joint that I will never ever play.If you want me to play it at a party of yours, it had better be on your iPod. But the Pepper riddim quickly steered itself right, and it’s got just the ideal group of artists on board making it a sleeper favorite of mine. The riddim’s producer Di Genius is on a track himself, along with the likes of Mavado, Elephant man, Frisco Kid and more. But no one takes it home for me the way Shabba Ranks (Him deh ya!) does!

01:29:37 - Pepper/Rules and Laws blend
01:30:00 - Rule and Laws
I thought Enemy Lines was my 2nd favorite until I played this one. It’s not just the Beenie or Matterhorm. Everybody puts in work here.

01:34:50 - Thirteen
This riddim first caught my attention because of my boy Tippa, who has no relation to Don Tippa who has the last two tracks on the podcast. That last song…Girl Dweet…it just catches you. You can just see the girls in the dancehall “showin how they dance and balance pon’ their hand”

Not much more to say other than just that. This is a straight up joyride. Imagine you're on a long stretch of road, nowhere in particular to go, top down, a full tank of gas, and this mix cued up.

You'll want to dance the whole way through but will find that conflicts with simultaneously moving at 95mph while you and your crew are wilding out in the drop top.

We set it off with one of my all-time favorite riddims, Punaany. From then on, we're treated to a non-stop assortment of Dancehall classics from artists the likes of Terror Fabulous, Sanchez, Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Tanya Stephens, Red Rat, Bounty Killer, Buju Banton, Sean Paul, Serani, Busy Signal, Baby Cham, Vybz Kartel, Lady Saw, Gyptian, Cecile, T.O.K., Capleton, and MORE!!!

KOMPA SIRO MYEL: Volume 1

While this has primarily been a Hip-Hop & Reggae podcast, it is certainly not an exclusionary one. And how could I exclude the music which is as inate to me as can be. Whie I'm Brooklyn born through and through, the blood which courses through my veins is a beautiful hue of red and blue. Haitian blood.

It's a wonder that I took this long to record my first Kompa mix. I won't front - it took a bit of research, for which I have to give a big shout out to Crooke Ave's own Fritzy Love for the huge assist! Kid, without you, this mix is twenty minutes and 4 songs. Good lookin' out! I had a bast digging through the virtual crates.

On this mix, we're joined by the likes of Carimi, Djakout Mizik, T-Vice, Krezi Mizik with special appearances by Top Vice, Sweet Micky and more. Some call it a dance...others call it a party. We call it a "balle." Whatever you call it, put on your dancing shoes, press play, and join this one in progress.

MIXTAPE EDITION: 1990's Hip-Hop, Voume I

I was born in the early 70's, which means that I was pretty much born with Hip-Hop, and grew up with Hip-Hop. In so many ways in my life, as Hip-Hop goes, I go. And vice versa. If you're a 70's baby, the same probably holds true for you.

So it's only fitting that my 20's coincided with what was inarguably the greatest decade of the genre - The 1990's. Sure, maybe by the time the 21st century came along, Hip-Hop sprouted her wings and really started to come into her own. But her formative years? The ones that made her the sexy beast she is? The 90s, without a doubt.

In just an hour and a half and 43 tracks, I couldn't begin to capture her full essence, but hopefully this first of a number of volumes will serve to help paint the picture. This isn't a time-line or linear design, because Hip-Hop isn't linear. She's is, was, and always will be a 360 degree cipher. Press play and join mine

REGGAE CONCERT SERIES V.2 - BOUNTY KILLER: Poor People's Governor

A friend of mine (whose placement in that category I might have to rethink), asked me if I thought I could pull off a Bounty Killer concert series mix. After a long period of wondering whether not not he'd lost his mind, I finally bothered to ask why he thought it was a question. His next comment positively floored me.

"Cause Bounty doesn't have enough real hits, he said. That's why Beenie's the King of the Dancehall." Oh the folly of youth. As far as I'm concerned, there's no doubt that Beenie is the King of the dancehall. But if that is indeed the case, than Bounty is no less than its Prime Minister (and self-proclaimed poor people's governor).

With hits like Mama, Gal, Anytime, Sufferah, Cellular Phone, Lodge, Coppa' Shot, Mr. Wanna Be, Wrong Name Yu Call, Down In the Ghetto, Action Speaks Louder, The Lord Is My Salvation, Another Level, Look, Spy Fi Die, Dead This Time, If A War, Bullz of Chicago, Not Another Word, New Gun, More Gal, Statement... and MORE, I was certain that my boy was dropped on his head, sometime shortly after he was born in 1980 something.

His loss. But fortunately I was here to save the day...

REGGAE CONCERT SERIES V.1: BERES & SANCHEZ

Happy V-Day y'all!!! It's with perfect and coincidental timing that this mix is the latest podcast scheduled for release, recorded earlier just tonight.

I don't really have to get into much of an explanation. When you know Beres Hammond or Sanchez are on the microphone, it's pure niceness. And each chune, they're pretty much doing one of two things - loving Jah, or loving their woman. So for the next hour, sit back, relax...or better yet, get up and grab the love of your life...if he or she isn't there, just hold yuself tight, imagine that they are, and lover's rock the night away...

<itunes:summary>Happy V-Day y'all!!!

Hope everybody is enjoying a great 2011 so far! I missed you all! And I most definitely missed my turtables and it feels SO goooood to be baaaack!

This mix was pretty much a testament to just that. It's just me having long overdue fun, from intro to the last song - which by the way is appropriately called "Last Song." It's by a Swedish Hip-Hop group named Looptroop, and it's quite easily my favorite track on the entire mix.

As a matter of fact, those songs you see with an asterisk next to it in the play list is a new or rare cut you might not have heard yet, for which I have a particular affinity - like "A Girl Like You" by Psalm One at the 33:38 minute mark. LISTEN to this track. Then run it back & listen again!

Enjoy!

CONCERT SERIES II: Hip-Hop Monsters

Straight to the point, with 90 + minutes and 31 tracks bangin' from start to finish, this mix is a straight up monster. Being the concert series, the artist rotation isn't deep, but trust, it doesn't need to be.

Big shout to Jay Electronica, the newest member of the Roc Nation, featured on a few tracks, including the brand new banger "Shiny Suit Theory" featuring Jay-Z. You'll find a few new joints on here...some you might have heard already...some perhaps not. Either way, like I said, they're all monsters. Why don't you press play and see for yourself...

I Love Reggae, Volume 4: Dutty Skinout Edition

This mix was a straight up homage to my youth. I wouldn't classify it as an old school mix, because this is of a slightly different breed. This mix highlights the Skinout chune. That dark East Flatbush Brooklyn basement party with nothing but Guiness bottles lining the driveway outside, while inside is a sweat box of pure unadulterated winery. And I'm not talking about booze.

Yes, the skinout tune. And this mix comes with a special ode to one of the toughest skinout riddims ever. The first 15 minutes or so take us through what is known as "The Punaany." Mercy! From Admiral Bailey, to Elephant, to Beenie, to Shabba, to Lady Saw...no dancehall artist with hopes of a viable career can some through the ranks without having blessed the Punaany riddim, and blessed it well. And we've got those chunes right here, from jump.

So, no more delay, press play and GYAL SKINOUT!

SUNDAY CHUNE UP Volume V: The Big Tune

A sweet, warm and easy Sunday reggae vibe, true to the podcast's title. Big chunes galore.

Roots, Culture, Lover's Rock. It's got your host of favorite artists, backed by the toughest riddim sections out. But probably no tune bigger than the final song, "Earth" by jailed superstar Buju Banton, straight from behind his prison walls. Brand new just for you.

Nuff chat. Press play and enjoy!

CONCERT SERIES: Featuring EMINEM

Very few artists have elicited at least two Podcast episode postings up on here. Jay-Z is one, with An Hour and Change with Hov I & II (http://clodimus-sounds.podomatic.com/entry/eg/2009-09-15T18_22_36-07_00) and The Evolution of Hov (http://clodimus-sounds.podomatic.com/entry/eg/2010-03-03T20_10_27-08_00). It’s been a little over a year since the first and last Eminem Podcast, mixed shortlty before the release of the “Relapse” album – Shady Influence (http://clodimus-sounds.podomatic.com/entry/eg/2009-05-17T20_15_20-07_00).

After the recent release of his hit “Recovery,” it occurred to me, and I rightly lamented, that I’d never been to an Eminem concert. While I’ll be fortunate to see him take the stage with Hov this fall at Yankee stadium, still, I’ve never had the pleasure of an Eminem show. But it got to me to wondering just what it might be like. While I unfortunately can’t offer the live show, I like to think that this mix at least brings you a taste of what the Shady/Aftermath show experience might sound like. So sit back, press play, and enjoy!

<b><u>Roots Rockers Riddims: Volume IV</u></b>

It's been almost a year since I recorded the last Roost Rockers Riddims podcast episode. It was nice to take a trip back home. If you're familar with volumes 1-3, then you know this is something of a ride.

We start of with a mini-jugglin' session of some concious chunes, kicking it off with Rihanna's rendition of "Redemption Song," followed by a host of big chunes like "Distance" by Elephant Man, "Murder Dem A Play" by Brayn Art & Queen Ifrica and more.

We then ease into some of 2009 and 2010'sweetest Lover's Rock and Concious riddims like Found Her Love is the Answer, Substance, Melody Life, Rasta, and more.

Just past the 45 minute mark, we pick up the pace and your all your favorite artist's favorite artists make an apearanceon some of the hottest dancehall riddims out. Beenie, Bounty, Vybz, Gyptian, Assasin, Capleton, Lady Saw and more...they all come out to play and it's nothing short of a party! Riddims like the Bad People, DNA, 90 Style, Duck, Summer Breeze, Crusha, Colour, Black Widow and more - they're all promised to get you out your seat. If you're driving, you are cautioned to pul over by the time you get to the 55 minute mark. No...seriously. Pull over.

Enjoy!

GANGSTARR FOREVER: RIP GURU

This is actually a re-post of one of my early podcast episodes almost three years ago. I've always felt that GURU was one of the most underrated EmCees of all time. The bulk of his work with DJ Premier as the duo Gangstarr is testament to that.

It's a shame that we rarely ever truly appreciate our legendary artists until they're gone, and it makes me sad to think that GURU, will now be no different. I don't think this quick mix truly does justice to the depth of his catalogue, which is why I've got a new one I'm piecing together. But in honor of his life and work, I just wanted to re-post this for now.

GURU, Rest in peace.

THE EVOLUTION OF HOV: Part I

In the past three years, I'd already produced two editions of "An Hour and Change with Hov," and while his catalogue is extensive, I figured I was done. But when my friend Christal, a Hov enthusiast, made a special request for yet another Jay-Z mix, I hit the crates again to see if anything else would come out. As I went through the singles and albums, from Reasonable Doubt to The Blueprint III, something did.

It's a rare opportunity that we get to truly observe the growth of an artist and the evolution of their lives through their work. This mix is an interesting look at the man who goes from spittin' "I hate all girls with ulterior motives, that's why I'm twenty plus years old, no sons no daughters," to "But today, I got my thoroughest girl wit me, I'm mashin the gas, she's grabbin the wheel, it's true to the heart; She rides with me - the new Bobby and Whitney." Clearly, the dude rapping in "Lucky Me is not even ready yet to date the woman featured on "Me and My Girlfriend."

So what happened? How did he get there? What took him from the corners in the late 90's to mashin' the gas with his thoroughest girl in '03? <itunes:summary>In the past three years, I'd already produced two editions of "An Hour and Change with Hov," and while his catalogue is extensive, I figured I was done.

What took place during the subsequent 6 years that further heightened the trajectory of his meteoric rise? Countless studio albums collaborations, and singles later, the story is indeed told. Press play and listen for yourslf.

SUNDAY CHUNE UP IV, Dancehall Edition: Big Riddim Ride

My neighbors were treated to a bright and early edition of Sunday Chune Up today (though I can't say for sure they'd call the thumping beats a treat). I pulled a small collection of some of my favorite riddims, including some brand new 2010 bangers

RIDDIM SECTIONS
1.GoGo - A hot Masive B riddim anchored by a killer Materhorn chune to start things off.

2.Kurrupt Krysmus - Brand new 2010 riddim that should have probably come out over the holidays, but it's got some hot summe rbangers nevertheless.

3. Rooftop - Lawd a' mercy! The Beenie on this riddim is RIDICULOUS.

4.Stainless - A drark yet soothing ridim that perfectly segues to...

5. The Amharic - I love these types of riddim sections!!! That thumping traditional dancehall beat, laced with a sweet Middle Eastern melody, backed by strings and additional percussion from the same. FIYAH!

6. Dream - And this where we start to coast. Think open road where yours is the only car around. The top is down and the wind is blowing through your hair as you start to cruise...

7. Street Team - ...then you start to pick up speed. When Firelinks touches a riddim, you know what to expect. This is not fo the faint of heart. Strap on your dancing shoes.

8. Self Defence - LOVE this riddim! And the queen's English spelling. It's a remix of the old Martial Arts riddim that featured Elephant's "The Bombing." The energy god does not disappoint on this new version with "Sweep"

10. Outta Ada - Simply put, this riddim is out of order...in the "not bad meaning bad, but bad meaning good" sense. Hope your dancing shoes are still laced on. And oh my goodness, the Buju 'pon dis riddim...OUTTA ADA!

11. XMore - Sean Paul and Frisco Kid - A hot throwback dancehall riddim with these two riding the top tracks. There should definitely be more artists on this riddim.

12. Unknown Number - Grab up yuh partner and..slow whine...slow whine...slow whine...

13. Triple Bounce - Vybez, Eelephant, Beenie, Matterhorn, and more Vybz. A riddim like this required no less.

14. 12 Furlong - An acoustic masterpiece. An instrumentally rich riddim built for dancing. And it was also built for two of the boon fiyah chunes you'll find rit by Capleton, and Beenie.

Press play and enjoy!

I Love Reggae, Volume 3: One-Drops & Riddims

This mix started out as a Garnett Silk compilation. But somewhere along the line as I getting the chunes together, my mind started to wander. "What if Garnett had clash with Jah-Cure?" As I started to play, all of sudden, Luciano wanted to come flex. Before I knew it, Sizzla had joined the fray and the first half-hour ends up being a friendly battle-royale of sorts between the four of them. One after the other, chune for chune.

The remaining hour and 15 minutes is an assortment of classic one-drop chunes, and some of the hottest riddims out like Chant Down Babylon, 18 and Over, Stop Fighting Rock Steady, African, New Chapter, and more. There's an assortment of artists like Beres Hamond, Etana, Capleton, Fantoh Mojah, Tony Rebel, Richie Stephens, Maxi Priest, [free]Buju Banton,, some BOOM FYAH chunes by Queen Ifrica, and of course, many many more.

If you're in a cool out vibe, in the mood for some article chunes, just sit back and press play.

"It's been a long time, I should'nt have kept you,
without a hot mix to step to..."

Hey everybody. Sorry for the long gap between Podcast episodes. This fall has been a crazy one, and I for one am ecstatic that I've finally had a chance to post something for you. I've been sitting on this in my head for a minute now and I'm glad it's finally out. To my Reggae & Dancehall fans, I also sincerely apologize. I know, it's been a particularly long stretch for you, and for me as well, so let's get into this Eargasm, and exhale.

CAUTION: If you are not a regae or dancehall fan, listening to this mix may cause you to consider that you've been wasting your life away all these years. Ask somebody.

Enjoy!

An Hour and Change With Hov, Volume II: The Blueprint Edition

It's been almost a year since I broadcast my first artist compilation episode, "An Hour and Change with Hov." Insistent requests demanded a re-post earlier this year, and to this day it's still one of the most frequently listened to and downloaded podcasts.

I've been pretty busy in the past year...but then again, so has Jay-Z. Apparently, the man must have a family to feed or something because he has been on his grind hard, putting out banger after banger. It's with this, and again by popular demand, that I bring you "An Hour and Change with Hov Volume II: The Blueprint Edition."

This episode isn't called "The Blueprint Edition" lightly. Like the first episode, it's a journey through the man's extensive body of work, each song, though Hip-Hop, quite unique. And and of course, Hov's mastery at navigating the varied waters with his flow(s) never wavers. The list below only tells a fraction of the story. Press play and hear the rest.

Enjoy!

<u>Those Were the Days:</u> 90's Bashment Edition

So, I've got a friend named Sonia who made a special request of me not too long ago. As she twirled her curls, she said "You know what I'd like to hear...some 90's reggae." Okay, she didn't really twirl her curls, but she did ask for some 90's chunes, and she didn't have to ask twice!

As reggae goes, I'm a 90's baby, so I really had a blast pulling all these classic tracks. 90's reggae should be a separate genre in and of itself. If you're a fan then you know what I'm talking about. They don't make chunes like Bounty's "Cellular Phone" anymore...or Buju's "Sensimillia Persecution"...Shabba's "Twice My Age," "Roots and Culture," or "Wicked Inna Bed"...Beres' "Show It Off". And how can we forget classic dance riddims like Quarter to Twelve, Mudd Up, Arab Attack, or Heartbeat.

It's all in there and much MUCH more. This mix is pure Bashment. Like a basement party on East 52nd and Tilden in Brooklyn in 1991 on a Friday night. Yeah...bashment like so.

Sonia, nuff luv, nuff respect, and thanks for the inspiration. Enjoy!

Roots Rockers Riddims: Volume III

I had a really good time recording this episode. In true Roots Rockers Riddims fashion, we go on a ride!

Our early warm segment includes classics by artists like Yelloman...Dennis Brown...Sugar Minott...Sanchez...Barrington Levy...Junior Reid...Frankie Paul...Tenor Saw and more! We could actually call the first 20 minutes or so a King Jammys/Sly and Robbie fest.

The next 40 minutes or so we get into some realy sweet culture and lovers rock one drops. Sizzla...Morgan Heritage...Richie Spice...Luciano...Collie Budz... Jah Cure...Anthony B...Gyptian...they all make a much welcome appearance along with a host of others. This segment also features the Nylon Riddim, featuring artists like Queen Ifrica, Chuck Fenda, Tony Rebel, Demarco, Assasin, Busy Signal and more.

At that point, my cell phone rang...which prompted me to pull Cellular Phone by Bounty Killer. Whenever you go to Bounty, things start to happen. Mega Banton came out. Beenie had to hold court of course. Terror Fabulous. Jigsy King. Bucaneer. Even Little Lenny blesses us with one of my personal all-time favorites "Lone Cocksman"

At this point, the Inspector Riddim ended up in my hands. It's a recycled riddim ridden quite well by the likes of Zumjay...Lady Saw...Bounty...Elephant Man...Mad Cobra...Movado... and of course, more.

Folks, if you're not familiar with the Blue Steel Riddim, then I suggest you skip this next segment of the mix if you're not prepapred to dance. Or hold on to something. If you're in a public place, you WILL start getting elbows from the people you are knocking into. Vybz Kartel, Ward 21, Red Rat, Cecile, Kiprich, Mad Anju...simply put, bring pure fyah!

My favorite thing about that riddim is that its the absolute PERFECT segue to the Egyptian Riddim. In any case, I'm sure I don't have to tell you all about the damage done on the Egyptian by Vybz, Sean Paul, T.O.K., Bling Dawg, Frisco Kid, Spragga, Elephant and a host of others.

We close our two hour episode with Capleton, Sean Paul, Anthony B, Vybz Kartel, Sizzla, Tanya Stephens, and Bounty Killer taking us home on the SiliconeRiddim. Like I said, Roots Rockers Riddims is a ride. Buckle up, press play and enjoy!

Sands of Time: Old School Hip-Hop Volume I

We're gonna go back...way back...and come forward a bit. But I promise I won't take you beyond 1991. Heck...we might not even get that far.

I'm not going to have a "Brown Sugar" moment here. But I damn sure do remember when I fell in love with Hip-Hop. It was the summer of 1980. My cousin Mike (short for Michelle) lived up the block, round the corner and down the street from us. My sister and I were home alone one day and Mike called us over.

I knew I wasn't really invited and it was just that my sister couldn't leave me by myself. But I happily tagged along anyway. I figured if my mother came home early and caught me there solo, I might catch some reflex licks first, so I didn't have to be asked twice to come along.

We got to Mike's and this was when I learned that this was all about a tape. This little blue 60 minute cassette that had this song on it my sister absolutely had to hear. It was The Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight." Mike must've had her own copy because we got to go home with the tape, and it was all I listened to. Day and night. Hotel, motel, holiday inn.

So this episode...it's an homage to that. To the day Mike almost got my sister ass beat by my mom for a tape. Oh yeah...we weren't supposed to leave the house either. But had we gotten caught, I think my sister's sacrifice would have been well worth it.

Enjoy!

(Ok...so we did have a "Brown Sugar" moment. Sue me.)

Sue me.)

"Nas Is Like..."

        "...New York is history,
besides that %!&*$ 50,
occasionally Jay-Z,
and maybe Nas with his inconsistency"

That was spit by Joelle Ortiz, a Brooklyn Hip-Hop artist, on what is probably one of the dopest freestyles I've heard in a long time. But Ortiz isnt the subject here. It's Nas "with his inconsistency."

I've always found Nas to be an intriguing artist. Whether you're a fan or not, his work merits a fair amount of attention. This Podcast's inaugural broadcast was a mix of some of Jay-Z's hits (bottom of the page at http://clodimus-sounds.podomatic.com). While Nas' catalogue is deep, I don't think he can match Jay-Z song for song in the No. 1 department. But that said, I'm also not sure that the flights and fancies of popular culture are a fair or accurate measure of an artists true "success."

When I say he's...intruiging, it's because I often wonder how the mind that bred songs like "The Cross" or "One Mic" also begat hits like "Oochie Wally" (which is the one song on this mix that I actually regret having included). Add to the intrigue, like I said, "Oochie Wally" was a hit! Really? Ah well...like I said, the flights and fancies of popular culture...

I had a really good time during this session. I've always been a Nas fan, but I found that as I pulled tune after tune, that fact was reaffirmed. If you too are a fan, I hope you'll feel the same. If you're not, then hopefully at the least, this might start making you wonder why.

Enjoy!
